DOL Releases Report on Employment Situation — May 2008

The U.S. Department of Labor released its report for May 2008 on the employment situation in the U.S.  The table of contents for the report can be found here.  This is the DOL summary:

THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION:  MAY 2008

The unemployment rate rose from 5.0 to 5.5 percent in May, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend down (-49,000), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.  In May, employment continued to fall in construction, manufacturing, retail trade, and temporary help services, while health care continued to add jobs.  Average hourly earnings rose by 5 cents, or 0.3 percent, over the month.

DOL Releases New “elaws” Tool To Help Employers Comply With Labor Laws

According to a press release issued by the U.S. Department of Labor, the DOL has released a new “elaws” tool to help employers comply with the recordkeeping, posting and notice requirements of various labor and employment laws.  The elaws site can be found here.

Unemployment Steady In November

The U.S. DOL released its November Employment Situation data.  The report shows unemployment holding steady at 4.7% for November 2007 and average hourly earnings rising 8 cents.  Last year, the jobless rate was 4.5%.  According to the DOL, employment rose in service industries in November, but fell in construction, manufacturing and financial services.  Leisure, hospitality and accommodations employment also edged up in November.

Productivity Up In Third Quarter
